On this date in 1945, a pilot landed a jet—under jet power—for the first time on an aircraft carrier. It was a Ryan FR Fireball, a VF-41 model, and the incident was unplanned and almost an accident. One of the plane’s jets failed on approach, was re-started, and the pilot almost overshot the carrier. The pilot managed to catch the last wire and hit the crash barrier at the end of the deck.
