Today is the birthday of the love of my life, Jen. I keep discovering how few ways there are to say “I love you” but how wonderful it is to learn new ways to tell her.

Satchel Paige pitched in his final major league baseball game on this date in 1965. He was 59 years old, and Charles O. Finley, the owner of the Kansas City A’s, signed him to a single-game contract. The game was against the Boston Red Sox, and Paige started, pitched three scoreless innings, and stuck out one batter, the opposing pitcher. Paige sat on a rocking chair in the bullpen between innings.

There is a story associated with the following video. Gould was not the pianist scheduled to perform Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra that night, Arturo Michelangeli was. Michelangeli fell ill, however, and the orchestra’s staff phoned Gould, who lived in Toronto. He agreed to perform the work, live and on television, even though he had not performed it in years. Gould did not awake that day knowing he would be a part of a national broadcast. As you can see, he has no musical score in front of him on the piano. He still retained the score in his memory.
Christopher Reeve was born 64 years ago today.
